Today Ebony.com featured a quote on its homepage from Regina Taylor that was filled with typos. The quote reads: “A women who knows her valve will only put up with a nonsense for so long. You either get right or get left.” African American media is oftentimes not taken seriously because of errors such as this one. Why would Ebony.com choose to feature this quote ladened with typos on its homepage? Did they not think their target audience is smart enough to catch it? With African Americans having the lowest performance academically, it is imperative that we make sure our content is published with minimal typos as feasible. Everyone makes mistakes, even media giant Yahoo! has articles that may have a few typos, but those articles are generally not on the homepage and they’re usually written by authors who are contracted for $3-$7/article written. I wonder if the person who was responsible for posting the quote honestly thinks it’s grammatically correct.
People were alarmed to read the letter that mega-star Beyonce` Knowles wrote to First Lady Michelle Obama that had similar typos such as; “women” as opposed to woman, using commas in places that didn’t need one, and combining the words “up” and “to” into one word. If we aren’t taking the time to learn how to put sentences together correctly, how do we expect to be taken serious in a country that presumes we’re all illiterate and more concerned with the new Lil Wayne song than we are our children’s report cards?
We’ve got to do better.
