South African Woman Faces Death Penalty for Smugging Drugs in Thailand

A South African woman was arrested by Thai police, on Wednesday, while trying to enter the country with with four and a half pounds of crystal methamphetamine. The meth is reported to be worth approximately $80 000 in Thailand.

The woman claims that a Nigerian man hired her to transport some “luggage” and paid her $760 to do it. There is a trend of Nigerian men to hire naive women to transport drugs for them and unfortunately, when things go wrong, the women are left to face the harsh penalties by themselves.

The 31 year old woman, Adelina Ntshebleng Lephutha Ononiwu, was charged with drug trafficking, which carries a death sentence in Thailand. According to Thai Police Thailand has seen a marked increase in seizures of methamphetamine.
