Marked Increase in Homeschooling for African Americans

African Americans are the fastest growing group of home-schooling parents, according to the the department of Education.

The National Home Education Research Institute reports that the total number of kids being home-schooled has more than doubled since 1999 to more than two million and over 220,000 of those students are African-American.

Education sociologist say African-Americans are looking at home-schooling as a better alternative to public school because of issues such as bullying and drugs. Also, many public schools do not focus on important areas such as African American history and home-schooling parents are able to do so when they educate their own children.

According to George Noblit, an education sociologist,home-schooling will continue to accelerate among African-Americans over the next decade.

I think that’s great… Too many children don’t get the benefits of learning about their on heritage in school and the Dept. of Education don’t seem to be trying to focus on it so when the parents know, yes, teach one and hopefully, they’ll share it with a friend… The more we know, the better we grow… And with the way the world is not growing, maybe this will impact our future generation…
